Losing a password is different from losing a private key

With a typical centralised exchange account, you log in and act through the platform while its custody arrangements manage the keys. Recovering account access depends on the provider’s identity checks and support process.

Self-custody puts that control—and the backup responsibility—with you. Lost keys or a lost recovery phrase can mean losing access to the assets; leaked keys can let someone else use them. The word wallet alone does not settle this question, because some wallet services still use third-party custody.

Does a cold wallet always mean self-custody?

No. Hot and cold describe how keys are stored and connected. Self-custody and third-party custody describe who controls them. These are separate questions.

An exchange can use cold storage, and an individual can use a hot wallet. A platform’s cold-storage claim does not give you its keys. Holding your own keys still leaves the risks of lost backups and signing the wrong transaction.

Look at how you can move assets out

Low trading fees are easy to compare, but withdrawal terms affect everyday use too. Supported assets and networks, withdrawal limits and fees all influence whether you can move assets as you intend.

For third-party custody, the separation of customer and platform assets—and your rights if the provider shuts down—also matter. Neither a platform name nor the words cold storage establish those protections.

With self-custody, protecting backups is part of protecting the assets. Do not give your recovery phrase to someone claiming to be support or enter it into this site or an unfamiliar lookup tool.
